Employment

The major employers on Guam are (in no particular order) the Government of Guam, Continental Airlines, the US Federal Government, and the hotel industry and related businesses. Guam has 2 military bases, one on each end of the island, with plans to move thousands of U.S. Marines and their dependents here from Okinawa over the next several years.

According to the Guam Department of Labor (GDL) the future looks bright for the island as Guam expects to see an increase in military presence in the next few years and may even experience a shortage of skilled labor. Thousands of jobs are expected to be created so people of varying skills and professions will be needed.

The Office of the Governor of Guam agrees with this forecast and predicts that employment will continue to increase. Due to new federal defense and government of Guam projects including new schools, and a number of infrastructure projects including water and road improvements increases in construction employment is expected soon. In addition to increases in construction employment the island expects to see a continued increase in the service industry in hotels, hospitality and retail.
