Cost of Living on Guam Part II

Along with everything else, the cost of buying gasoline on Guam continues to rise. I have no idea what it's like in the U.S. Mainland at the moment, but I noticed a widening gap between the prices on base and the prices off base for a gallon of gas.

Gas costs about 70 cents per gallon more off base.

Fortunately, the island is small enough that you don't really do that much driving. But, most of the driving is stop-and-go, which gas guzzlers like my car just love. So the gas consumption evens out, for me anyway.

One of the new trends on Guam is to ride a scooter. Even though the weather isn't really scooter friendly, with out-of-the-blue rain showers during bright sunny days and searing sun, more and more of them are on the road. Sometimes met with irritation by four wheeled motorists, scooters max out at pretty low speed to be on the open roads. While the speed limit most places is only 35 mph, most people tend to use the speed limit sign as a general guideline rather than a law.

Riding a bicycle on Guam's roadways to me is one of those "do so at your own risk" things. There are no bicycle lanes or wide shoulders here to accommodate bicycles, and since most of our roads are two lanes only, the ability of a driver to give the cyclist plenty of room while avoiding oncoming traffic is limited. Compounding the problems experienced by recreational cyclists is the poor conditions of most of Guam's roads, so you're dodging not only potholes, but cars too. Best of luck on that adventure.
