Guam's Overlook Hotel

Guam's Overlook Hotel

Well it's actually the Sherwood Hotel, but it kind of reminds me of the Overlook Hotel made famous in "The Shining" (1980) with Jack Nicholson.

As a kid I used to love to crawl around in abandon buildings. Would love to get inside the Sherwood and have a look. It's probably quite the bio-hazard inside now, considering it's been shut up for years with no apparent ventilation. Maybe some strange creatures have evolved from the fungus, and now patrol the halls looking for errant explorers to consume, who knows.

I don't know much about it, but I do know that since I got here in August 2004, it's been sitting there. With all the new construction going on I'm a little surprised a developer hasn't tried to turn it into yet another half-million dollar per unit condo building. Don't get me started, that's a post topic all it's own.

I hear it was significantly damaged in one of the big storms years back, and since, hasn't re-opened. That, along with pending law suits (just a rumor of unknown validity) has kept it from being sold or otherwise used. The newest addition to Guam's Tumon beach, Guam Beachfront Residents, was somewhat of a ghost building for a few years too. It's not be developed into quite a nice place to live.

In my travels to some of the surrounding islands, I've seen a few things like this that have made me stop to scratch my head. The Fiesta Mall on Saipan, totally abandon last time ever since I got here in Aug 2004 and took my first trip to the island. Looked I was there, like something you'd expect to see zombies walking around in. Perhaps at one time it was a busy shopping center. But over the last few years, Saipan's tourist trade has bled out almost completely. Which is too bad, Saipan is a really nice Island. Especially for WWII junkies like me.

Hopefully the economy on Guam will continue to improve with the military build-up scheduled to start any day now. We're starting to see the real estate market regain it's pulse and things will start to swing in a positive direction.
