One of the major problems most people have when they arrive is transportation. There is no public transportation on Guam to speak of, and the hotels are far enough away from either base that you don't have any choice but to rent a car, if you don't have one already that is.

Renting a car can be a $700 - $900 per month non-reimbursable expense for military & civil service people PCSing in. Quite a hunk of money. But if you're car is being shipped here, you'll have to endure the expense for a while, or pick up a used car.

So, to get into this topic a little, let's start with some of the things you can expect. First, don't expect cars to be cheap here at all. You might think with the high volume of people coming and going that you can pick up something for "a couple thousand." It's not as easy as you think and I really don't know why. This seems to apply to both purchases from dealers and individual sellers.

There are a few sources for finding used cars that you can checkout online. I can't put links up in fear of wrecking my google rankings, but you can easily find them for yourself with a quick google search.

1. Andersen AFB / Navy Base Guam Lemon Lots Facebook page. I don't know who maintains it, if anyone, but there are quite a few cars posted there from time to time. Keep in mind you'll probably have better luck going to check out the lots for yourself. I routinely check them and post what's available on our facebook page.

2. Guam Auto Spot. Solid used car dealer with better than average prices.

3. Pacific Daily News classifieds.

4. Joint Region "Edge" newspaper classifieds.

5. www.guampcs.com facebook page. Please feel free to post anything you have to sell or what you are looking for there.

There are several other car dealers that you'll find online, you'll have to make your own assessment on their prices. Cars just cost more here, plain and simple.
