So you just found out you're getting orders to Guam. It's natural to have a lot of questions, and you're finding out that the answers aren't so easy to find. Sponsors are sometimes hard to get a hold of, the time zone difference makes it difficult to make phone calls, and waiting for people to get back to you via email is making you crazy. Here are a few things to make your transition to Guam a little less stressful:

  • Make Plans - planning is one of the most important parts of the process of any PCS. Certainly essential if you want a smooth move. The moment you get your PCS orders, start making plans so that you don't get caught short when things start happening.

  • Keep stuff to a minimum - try to keep it basic, but comfortable. Homes on Guam can be considerably smaller than what you might be used to. Knick-knacks and other items you can live without should be left behind or put in storage.

  • Expect the unexpected - every move is different so be prepared for sudden changes, different cultures, unfamiliar weather, and adjust accordingly.

  • Always have a checklist - leaving behind something very important to you, or forgetting essentials, can suck big time. In order to avoid anything like this from happening, always have a checklist for your move.

  • Set things in motion as soon as you can - most people request for their move dates as soon as they know when it is most convenient for them to do this. Confirm these dates with your Transportation Service Provider and start the packing and moving process immediately after.

  • Be prepared for the worst while hoping for the best - fretting and worrying will get you nothing but stress, so all you can do is prepare everything as best as you can and pray everything will be alright when they get to your new place.

  • Choose whether to live on base or off - you cannot be guaranteed housing on base if these places have long waiting lists. If you choose to live on base, have an off base alternative ready in case you need to wait for a house on base.

  • Enjoy the new experiences a PCS brings - each new place brings with it new friends and new adventures. Enjoy each place you move to and make memories wherever you go.
